Many importers focus on solar panel size, but battery capacity is the real determinant of runtime. A larger battery stores more energy, keeping the light on through the night and across cloudy days. Look for rechargeable lithium batteries of at least 1200mAh, and prefer models with replaceable batteries so the product outlives its first battery.
Waterproof Ratings Explained
Solar garden lights live outdoors, so a waterproof rating of IP65 or higher is essential. IP65 means the fixture is protected against dust and low-pressure water jets, covering rain and splashing. Cheaper lights rated IP44 may fail after heavy weather. For lights placed in fully exposed locations, insist on IP65 and verify the seal around the battery compartment.
Panel Efficiency and Placement
Monocrystalline panels convert more sunlight to electricity than polycrystalline, which matters in partial shade or short winter days. Position panels to face the sun and keep them clean, as even a thin layer of dust reduces charging. If your market has limited sun, prioritize higher panel efficiency over a lower price.
Avoiding the Cheap-Light Trap
The biggest source of returns in this category is under-specified lights: dim output, short runtime and early failure. Compare luminous flux (lumens), not wattage, and request samples to test brightness and runtime in real conditions. A slightly higher unit cost for a quality battery and panel almost always pays for itself in fewer returns and better reviews.
